Looking for a Rocket Money Alternative? Ask Claude Instead

August 31, 2026 · Ledgerwire

That’s the trade: Rocket Money finds and can act on subscriptions for a fee or a cut of savings; Ledgerwire finds them for free and stops there — you still do the canceling. Here’s an honest comparison, including the part where Rocket Money genuinely does more.

What does Rocket Money do, and why look for an alternative?

Rocket Money (formerly Truebill) is a paid budgeting app built around finding recurring subscriptions, negotiating bills on your behalf, and optionally canceling subscriptions for you — the negotiation and concierge features take a percentage of whatever they save, on top of a subscription fee for the app itself. People look for alternatives when the combined cost — app fee plus a cut of negotiated savings — starts to outweigh what they’re saving, or when they just want the subscription list without paying anyone else to act on it. Ledgerwire is built for that second group.

I didn’t build Ledgerwire to negotiate your cable bill. It reads your real transactions and gets them to Claude, so “what am I paying for every month” is a question you ask for free instead of a service you pay a percentage to run. What you lose is the part where someone else makes the phone call.

How is Ledgerwire actually different from Rocket Money?

Ledgerwire is a hosted, read-only connector: you link your bank once through OAuth, and Claude reads current balances and transactions when you ask, instead of a standing app that scans your accounts continuously and surfaces a subscriptions tab. There’s no negotiation team, no cancellation concierge, and no fee tied to savings — Ledgerwire only ever reads what your bank already reports.

Rocket Money’s business model depends on taking action for you — canceling, negotiating, sometimes disputing charges. Ledgerwire doesn’t take any action on your accounts at all; it’s strictly read-only, which is also why it can never move money or submit a cancellation on your behalf. Our data partner (routed through Quiltt to Finicity) handles the bank connection, and we hold only an encrypted, read-only access token — never your bank login, never write access to anything.

Can Claude cancel subscriptions or negotiate bills the way Rocket Money does?

No. Ledgerwire’s connection is read-only by design, so neither it nor Claude can cancel a subscription, dispute a charge, or contact a merchant on your behalf — that requires account write access Ledgerwire deliberately doesn’t have. What Claude can do is identify the recurring charges from your transaction history and draft the email or script you’d use to cancel it yourself, which is most of the actual work minus the phone call.

If what you want is someone else handling the cancellation end-to-end, Rocket Money’s concierge does something Ledgerwire structurally can’t. If you’re fine doing the last step yourself once you know what to cancel, this gets you there without a fee.

Do I lose subscription tracking by switching?

Not the detection, just the automation around it. Ask Claude “find recurring charges in my last 90 days, ranked by cost with the last charge date” and it works from your actual bank and card transactions, the same raw data Rocket Money’s detection runs on. One thing no bank feed can tell you — Rocket Money’s included — is whether you actually use a subscription: the data shows that a streaming service charged you, never whether you watched anything. Deciding what’s dead weight stays yours. What doesn’t carry over is Rocket Money’s standing background monitoring that pings you the moment a new subscription starts — Claude checks when you ask, or on a scheduled weekly check-in on paid plans, not continuously in the background.

For people who mainly wanted the list — not the negotiation, not the always-on alert — this is a straightforward downgrade in automation and a straightforward upgrade in cost: free instead of a monthly fee plus a cut of savings.

Is my data safer with Ledgerwire than with Rocket Money?

I can’t rank Ledgerwire against Rocket Money’s infrastructure — I don’t have visibility into how their systems are built, and I wouldn’t make a claim about a competitor I can’t verify. What I can describe is Ledgerwire: you authenticate through your bank’s own OAuth login rather than a password typed into a third party, the connection is strictly read-only with no code path that could move money or authorize a cancellation, and we store an encrypted access token rather than a persistent copy of your transaction history. Specifics are on our security page.

What are the honest limits?

Coverage varies by bank — some institutions report richer transaction detail than others, and when a field isn’t reported, Ledgerwire returns it as not reported, never as $0. Balances and transactions typically lag posting by a few days, so “this month’s subscriptions” reflects the most recently posted data, not a live feed. Ledgerwire also depends on our aggregator partner to reach your institution; if your bank isn’t supported yet, this isn’t the right fit — and again, it never cancels or negotiates anything for you.

FAQ

Will Ledgerwire cancel a subscription for me? No — it’s read-only, so neither Ledgerwire nor Claude can take action on your accounts. Claude can identify the charge and draft the cancellation message; sending it is on you.

Does Ledgerwire negotiate bills like Rocket Money’s premium tier? No, and it never will by design — negotiating a bill requires contacting a merchant on your behalf, which is outside a read-only connection.

How does Ledgerwire find recurring charges without a dedicated subscriptions tab? Claude scans your transaction history for repeating merchants and amounts when you ask, using the same category and merchant data your bank already reports — no separate detection engine to maintain.

Can I use Ledgerwire alongside Rocket Money? Yes — connecting your bank to Ledgerwire doesn’t affect any other app already linked to the same accounts.

Is there a free tier to try before committing? Yes — you can connect an account and ask Claude to list your subscriptions before deciding whether it replaces a paid tracking app.
