How is Ledgerwire actually different from a self-hosted budgeting app?

Ledgerwire is a hosted, read-only connector: you link your bank once through OAuth, and Claude or ChatGPT reads your balances and transactions live when you ask, instead of you maintaining a database yourself. There’s no server to run, no import step, and no manual categorization to keep current — Ledgerwire relays the categories your bank already reports.

The tradeoff is control. A self-hosted tool gives you full ownership of your data and your own categorization rules, which some people want, especially if they don’t want any third party in the loop. Ledgerwire trades that ownership for convenience: our data partner (routed through Quiltt to Finicity) handles the bank connection, and we hold only an encrypted, read-only access token — never your login, never a stored copy of your transaction history.

Do I lose budgeting features by switching?

Only the persistent system itself. Ledgerwire ships no budgeting engine — but connected to Claude, “group my last 90 days by category, propose monthly targets, and show me budget-vs-actual” gets built on demand from your real transactions, as a table or a chart. What it won’t replicate is the maintained envelope workflow: rollover rules, dollars pre-assigned before you spend, a system that persists and enforces itself between sessions. If strict envelope budgeting is the core workflow you rely on, Ledgerwire is a poor replacement for that, full stop.

What you gain instead is speed on the questions people actually ask most: recurring subscriptions, spending trends, “what did I spend at X,” balance checks across accounts. If that’s most of what you used your budgeting app for anyway, the switch is a net simplification, not a downgrade.

Is my data safer with Ledgerwire than with a self-hosted tool?

Safety here depends on what you’re optimizing for, not which tool is objectively “safer.” A self-hosted app keeps everything on infrastructure you control, which some people trust more by default. What are the honest limits?

Coverage varies by bank — some institutions report richer categories and holdings data than others, and when a field isn’t reported, Ledgerwire returns it as not reported, never as $0. Data typically lags posting by a few days, so a still-open period like “this month” is current-to-date, not final. And Ledgerwire depends on our aggregator partner to reach your bank, same as any connected finance tool; if your bank isn’t supported, this isn’t the right fit yet.

There’s also no import path from an existing OpenBudget-style setup — you’re starting fresh with live bank data, not migrating years of manually categorized history.
