Can Claude See My Bank Account?

August 3, 2026 · Ledgerwire

You: Wait, if I connect my bank to Claude, can it actually see everything in my account?

Claude: Only what the connection exposes — your balances and transaction history, refreshed every time you ask. It doesn’t see your online banking password, your full account or routing number, or any account at that bank you didn’t specifically link. And it can’t initiate a transfer or payment; the connection is read-only.

Can Claude see my bank account?

Claude can see the specific accounts you link through a read-only connector, and only the data fields that connector exposes: current balance, recent transactions, and basic account info like a nickname or last four digits. It cannot see anything at your bank beyond what you authorize, and it has no ability to log in on its own — every read happens through a token you granted.

What exactly can Claude see?

Once linked, Claude can read balances, transaction history (merchant, amount, date, category when the bank reports one), and account metadata like type and nickname. It requests this live each time you ask a question — it isn’t watching your account continuously, and it doesn’t get notified of new transactions on its own. If a bank doesn’t report a field, like a merchant category on a wire, Ledgerwire returns it as not reported, not as zero or blank in a way that implies nothing happened.

What can’t Claude see?

Claude can’t see your login credentials, your Social Security number, your full account or routing number, or any account at your institution that you didn’t explicitly connect. It also can’t see anything outside the authorization window — if you connect one checking account, Claude has no visibility into a savings account at the same bank unless you link that too. Each account is a separate, deliberate grant.

Does Claude see my login credentials?

No. You authenticate directly with your bank or through Plaid/Finicity-style aggregation, on your bank’s own login page, not inside Claude or Ledgerwire. What Ledgerwire receives afterward is an encrypted access token scoped to read balances and transactions — never your username or password. That’s standard OAuth-style bank linking, the same pattern Mint, YNAB, and most fintech apps use.

Can Claude move money through this connection?

No. The connector Ledgerwire provides is read-only by design — there’s no API call it can make that initiates a transfer, payment, or any account change. This isn’t a policy Claude follows; it’s a capability the connection simply doesn’t have. If a tool claims to both read your bank and pay your bills, that’s a materially different, higher-risk architecture than what Ledgerwire runs.

How do I revoke access?

You can revoke the connection at any time from your bank’s connected-apps settings or from Ledgerwire directly, and the access token stops working immediately. Nothing persists on Ledgerwire’s side after that beyond the standard account record you created — no cached copy of your transaction history sits around waiting to be re-synced. Revoking is the same one-click action whether you’re pausing for a week or done for good.

The honest limits

Coverage depends on your bank. Some smaller institutions or credit unions expose thinner transaction detail than the majors, and data can lag by a few days rather than reflecting the instant a charge posts. Ledgerwire routes connections through Quiltt to Finicity under the hood, so if that aggregator has an outage or your bank changes its integration, a sync can fail or lag until it’s resolved — Claude will tell you when data looks stale rather than guessing.

FAQ

Does Ledgerwire store my transactions on its own servers? Ledgerwire holds an encrypted access token to pull your data live, not a standing copy of your transaction history — each request goes back to your bank through the connector.

Can Claude see accounts at a different bank I haven’t linked? No. Only accounts you explicitly connect are visible; there’s no way for Claude to discover or query anything else at your institution.

What if I only want Claude to see balances, not transactions? Right now Ledgerwire links at the account level, so balances and transaction history come together — there’s no partial-field toggle today.

Is this the same access level as Mint or a budgeting app? Yes, functionally — read-only, OAuth-based, revocable. The difference is what reads it: your AI assistant instead of a dashboard — one that can also build you a chart or dashboard from the data when you ask.
